During World War II there was a shortage of male pilots to serve the war effort. Women employed by the United States Federal Civil Service formed a civilian women pilots' organization to allow men to serve in combat missions abroad. Known as the Women Auxiliary Service Pilots, or WASPs, these women trained and became pilots who tested and ferried aircraft as well as trained other pilots. They received veteran status in 1977 and were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.
