Born in 1917, Ruby Wine Sheldon held the first helicopter instrument instructor certification from the FAA. She flew for the U.S. Geological Survey, piloting aircraft over terrain while taking images of the ground. Sheldon did this all the way from Alaska to the Panama Canal. She also was an air racer and and participated in the Air Race Classic as a pilot and organizer.
