Ruth Law became the fifth licensed woman pilot in the United States in 1912. She bought her first aircraft from Orville Wright. Ruth was the first woman to do an aerobatic loop, and was the first woman to fly at night. In 1915 at a fair in Birmingham, AL, she looped her airplane 16 times. In 1917, she was the first woman authorized to wear a military uniform, but she was denied permission to fly in combat. Instead, she raised money for the Red Cross and Liberty Loan drives with exhibition flights. After World War I, she formed “Ruth Law’s Flying Circus,” a three-plane troupe that amazed spectators at state and county fairs. At one point in 1917, she earned $9,000 a week for exhibition flights.
