In 1961 Thon Griffith began piloting planes. She helped establish the Orange County chapter if the Ninety-Nines in the 1960's. Griffith spent two years as the International President of the Ninety-Nines, from 1978-1980. She flew in several all women races, including the Powder Puff Derby and the Angel Derby. In 1992, she was awarded the International Ninety-Nines Award of Merit.
